At Fort C.F. Smith Park, the dance event circulates
through the park and uses the many rooms of the Hendry
House.
"Fort C.F. Smith was constructed by Union Troops
in early 1863. The fortification extended the line of
Arlington forts to the Potomac River. It functioned
as part of the outer perimeter of defenses that protected
the Aqueduct Bridge of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.
To provide clear lines of fire for Fort C.F. Smith and
adjacent forts, all of the trees for miles around were
cut down." The Arlington County Department of Parks,
Recreation and Community Resources
Jane Franklin's
Clear Cut is influenced by these images from
the Civil War. Inside Out uses personal letters
from both Union and Confederate soldiers. Rally
uses sung fragments from the popular northern
tune, The Battle Cry of Freedom. Music by Judith
Shatin, Director of the Virginia Center for Computer
Music at the University of Virginia, incorporates electronically
manipulated text and music.
