Guest Artist Opportunity

Deadline: January 20, 2007
Jane Franklin Dance is presenting Jazz on Foot, which traces the history of jazz music from its early roots, with a day of workshops on March 17 and a matinee performance on March 18 at Alexandria's Ainslie Arts Center at Episcopal High School. We are looking for a dance company to perform alongside JFD at the matinee performance, and to contribute a work that uses the music of a jazz artist, calls on African traditions such as call-and-response, or connects with youth with rhythm or stepping. Please send description or DVD of proposed work to Jane Franklin Dance, 3700 S Four Mile Run Drive, Arlington VA 22206. Inquiries are welcome at 703-298- 3235.

Jazz on Foot has been traveling to Montgomery County Public Schools and to Virginia through partnering organizations the Humanities Project and the Alexandria Commission.  We are seeking additional hosting schools in Alexandria.  If you would like information about Jazz on Foot or other performances for your school, call 703-298-3235.

Dance Place

Dance Place co-presents Jane Franklin Dance in the premiere of Found, a collaboration with area choreographers and Up the Stairs in the Attic performed by women ages 45 and above. A reconstruction from Scape Vietnam, a Metro DC Dance Award finalist for "Outstanding New Work" rounds out the program.
Found spools ideas by choreographers, musicians and a visual artist into a dynamic new work. Dance ideas were disassembled, rearranged, recycled as connections were found to the fleeting passage of birds, the rhythms of underlying language, and the purposeful interactions of a group. Live piano and bass is by Kristen Benoit and Allan Von Schenkel. Heather Figi performs on electric violin.

Up the Stairs in the Attic is performed to live music by Mark Sylvester. With text developed by the performers, the dance looks at what we keep and when to let go.

Talk-backs follow both performances.
